Inflation rate in Sri Lanka

It has been said that inflation rate in Sri Lanka tops whole South and South East Asia.It is up to over 20% now. I think there are several reason for this.
1. Rising oil price in world market.
2. Escalated war.
3. Bad economic policies.

The first one is out of Sri Lanka's hand since Sri Lanka doesnt produce oil.So it is highly crusual factor for inflation.Every time oil price went up ,prices for public transport goes up.Not only that every other items including vegetable prices are going up too.

Escalated war is 2nd reason.Because It has been said that government has to allocate lot of money to war. Those money are not productive by economy wise.Although one might argue that those are short term expenditures but no one garantee when war will be ended near future.

3rd reason is government bad economic policies.Printing money to cover up budget deficits directly caused high inflation. It has been said that new notes value over 49 billion rupees printed by central bank.

Yes in the inflationary pressures are being felt worldwide.
As far as Australia to Europe, and this can be put down to petrol prices.

Government Policy hasn't been geared towards economic growth though and printing more money to cover its debt will always make the problems worse.

The trouble with a leftist government I'm afraid.

So Kolla, you propose we should be right-wing ?

We shoulda had a dictator run the country like Singapore. As long as the country improves no one gives a shit.

Its foolish to wonder about what SL would be like if it had not been for the war.

How different all are lived would be right now.

dictatorship means no freedom.thats the only thing we still have in srilanka.
and I dont think srilankan dictators could develop srilanka. surely they will develop their private wealth but not give any penny to genaral public.

Governments are not there to give people money. The government is leftist lol, look at the official title of Sri Lanka "Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka".
The government has too many MPs, too many minister and too many cabinet ministers.
Ranil's policies were more towards the centre-right and made better sense - but alas the war.
There is freedom in Sri Lanka for what? You can't say how you feel without being shot in the night by the police commissioner or bashed by Mervyn and his gang. Just because there are people giving the vote doesn't make it freedom.
Second, why do you want freedom for? freedom from what? how does a different government change the day to day life? just because its a principle doesn't make it right. democracy is a dream, like a carrot before the donkey.

A socialist government tends to spend more money than it has (which is bad for business) etc etc debt, inflation (everyone becomes poor). A capitalist government tends to cause some people to become richer, some to become poorer (some become poor).

at the end of the day, i don't particularly care -- even the JVP or JHU could run the country and it wouldn't change anything.

Batty, what freedom do we have in SL. If you were to go to SL do you feel safe or feel like you have the freedom to do as you wish ? Ofcourse not. If you just happen to rub anyone the wrong way you get shot or killed that night.

Dictatorship was the wrong word. What I meant was a government run in the manner it was/is run in Singapore.

No matter what a countries political system is- you need good people who genuinely care about making the country better. Im sure the guys in Singa also took their share of money from underhanded deals but as long as the country does well no one will care.
